HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC STATES COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CORPORATION

MASCAC INFORMATION

The Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation, formerly called the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference, and commonly known as the MAC, was organized on December 11, 1912 as a loose confederation of colleges. The first annual meeting occurred on May 16, 1913, followed by the first conference track meet at Lafayette College the next day.  The Middle Atlantic Collegiate Wrestling Association, formed in March 1925, was the first to name a Middle Atlantic Champion.  In 1952 the conference unified and recognized competition in all sports.  Many of the universities left the conference in 1974 when the NCAA created Divisions I, II, and III.  The MAC added women’s athletics in 1978.

Major changes occurred in 1993. Ten schools left to form their own association; their departure served as a catalyst for the remaining sixteen schools to form a streamlined, efficient, dual-league organization. This “new look” was part of a national movement to consolidate similar institutions for competitive athletic opportunities while increasing presidential involvement in the setting of athletic policy.  In 1999, spurred by changes in the NCAA championship structure, the Corporation formed as an umbrella for three conferences - Freedom, Commonwealth, and Middle Atlantic.

During the first 76 years, a number of Athletic Directors served as conference coordinator on a part-time basis. David B. Eavenson, served as President, Publicity Director and Executive Director from 1972 to 1988. The Conference entered a new era in 1988 with the selection of Nathan Salant as its first full-time Executive Director.  Linda Hopple succeeded him from 1993-2000; Ken Andrews, the current administrator, assumed the position in May 2000.

Current members are Albright College, Arcadia University, Delaware Valley College, DeSales University, Elizabethtown College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, the College at Florham, King’s College, Lebanon Valley College, Lycoming College, Manhattanville College, Messiah College, Widener University, and Wilkes University.  Alvernia College, Eastern University, and College Misericordia will join the Corporation in September 2008.

Currently, the Corporation sponsors competition in eleven men’s sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track and field, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and outdoor track and field. The eleven women’s sports are: basketball, cross country, field hockey, indoor track and field, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, outdoor track and field, and volleyball.
